After the first earthquake that struck Nepal in April, 2015, our monks organised a relief team to take supplies to earthquake victims. On 1st May, we visited Chaimayle village about an hour from Pharping. We went with two trucks and a jeep. We brought rice, dhal, sugar, biscuits, noodles, tea and flour to about 80 grateful villagers whose homes and livelihoods had been destroyed in the earthquake and had not received any relief packages from the government.
In association with three other monasteries from the area, we visited our local village of Dollu, taking corrugated iron to make temporary shelters for about 40 families, so that they have shelter during the coming monsoon.
We also visited four villages in the Gorka district, hiking for three days from Manang to get to the remote areas. We made donations to about 400 families to assist them rebuild their homes and schools.
Many of our monks families are from rural communities that suffered greatly during the earthquakes, some losing family members in the tragedy. To their families we continue to offer support as extended members of our monastic community.
All our efforts in these activities are done in the spirit of bodhichitta and with sincere compassion for all who are suffering.
