The householders would gain merit through their generosity and the monks would have the external conditions to continue their study and practice. However, In this modern age when many monasteries are located in multi-faith communities, and lay sanghas stretch the breadth of the globe, we outstretch a metaphorical offering bowl.
In Mahayana Buddhism, generosity is the first of the practices that as Buddhists we need to perfect (Skt. paramitas).
When we give anything, far more important than the nature or size of the gift, is that it is given freely and wholeheartedly, with kindness and compassion and with a pure intention, to benefit sentient beings.
